Using polarized Raman spectroscopy to study the stress gradient in mineral systems with anomalous birefringence

Our PhD student Nicola Campomenosi using experimental results coupled with selected finite element models showed that the ratio between the measured Raman peak intensity can be used to constrain the radial stress profile in the host around the inclusions. This study opens the way to further investigation of mineral deformation that leads to local symmetry changes that in the future we will be able to use as a mean to quantify deformation in minerals undergoing symmetry changes simply by measuring Raman intensities of selected bands. The manuscript is now available in contributions to mineralogy and petrology. To download the article click here
